archive depot, Ghent

Four basic principles determine the architectural concept for the expansion and optimization of the existing archive depot in Ghent.

The first principle involves expanding the existing archive zone with a view to a forward-looking long-term vision and maximizing the preservation of archive and depot functions at one location! Key to this is preserving the existing archive in the West wing during the works, allowing the entire 'new' archive to be maximally distributed across the ground floor due to its more closed nature. This includes creating a 'depot pedestal' where the public functions will be housed on top, with heritage as the foundation.

The second principle is to eliminate the multitude of small (historically grown) interconnected rooms, sluices, and corridors that currently make up the public reception area. A completely new building volume, while preserving the existing partly openable front facade, should create space for an open public reception. Openness and transparency are created towards the adjacent square, inviting casual visitors to take a look at ongoing exhibitions or a controlled glance into the archive depot.

The third principle builds on the central and welcoming function of the newly created foyer. The existing disorder of illogical walkways and connections is reduced to a coherent circular plan where a walkway, i.e., a gallery, is created around the event hall with adjacent inner gardens that connect all internal and public functions. An absolute asset to daily operations and interaction.

Lastly, the fourth principle is to create maximum openness to the surroundings. An end is put to the very closed and aloof appearance of today, and a maximum dialogue with the lively surroundings is envisaged. Aspects such as bringing the square into the foyer space, opening up the administrative wing, showcasing the new archive volume as a landmark, as well as opening up the existing closed rear facade as a secondary entrance form the basis.
