conversion of a former brewery, Baasrode
After nearly 50 years of silence, it is high time to bring 'life back to the brewery'. The former brewery site of the D'Hollander family is a true gem of industrial heritage in the center of Baasrode, overlooking the Sint-Ursmarus church on the banks of the Schelde river.
To revive the soul and magic of this site, which fell silent 50 years ago, there is a deliberate choice to maximally preserve the aforementioned industrial architecture. This will be enhanced with contemporary interventions aimed at repurposing it into a special residential site for the 21st century, creating a balanced synergy between old and new, privacy and public access, visibility and light…
The stately building volumes of the former malting house with the adjacent brewer's residence, the old art deco germination room, the concrete structure of the fermentation cellar, the chimney of the boiler room, as well as the old entrance gate form the architectural and heritage foundation of this repurposing project. They will be delicately and thoughtfully integrated with some contemporary architectural elements and volumes to create a livable whole with high spatial quality.
The former, now dilapidated laboratory spaces will be replaced to make way for additional breathing space in the form of a collective inner area, connecting all building volumes with a green meander.
