living in the countryside, Aalter

The expansion for this house located in the fields of Aalter was conceived as a pavilion, perpendicular to the existing house. The very dark and closed living spaces of the existing house are reduced to ancillary functions such as storage rooms, TV corner, and office. The living spaces in the new section are developed as very light-filled spaces in contrast to the existing house, nestled in the green character of the surrounding garden and the expansive countryside.

The light steel structure of the expansion is meant to emphasize the pavilion feeling, where the walkways are split into an indoor and outdoor course created by airy canopies acting as sunshades and a covered terrace area. The covered terrace area with an outdoor kitchen acts as a hinge point and transition to an 'isolated' multipurpose space for the children.
