To enhance the dialogue between the historical character of the Bruges City Hall (also occupied by the Germans during WWI) and the photo exhibition, a clear separation of both elements was chosen. Ten porticoes were spread out over the two wings of the upper floor. Five porticoes in a chaotic arrangement for the Magnum panel, and five rationally ordered porticoes for the historical images. These mausoleum-like structures serve as distinct exhibition spaces within the magnificent historical setting of the halls. This resolves the conflict between the two strong elements into a reinforcing connection. The exteriors of the porticoes were adorned with texts about suicide in the Westhoek as a form of dialogue on the suffering and loss of many young people during WWI, and today. The combination of the exhibition spaces within the porticoes, the texts on the exterior panels, and the framework of the halls results in a 360° experience of their 'spatial context'…
